Fashion fiesta with a `difference'
In A Mission Sanitation cultural fiesta '08 has been planned with the objective of promoting awareness of sanitation issues. Sulabh International, a nongovernmental organization at the forefront of the sanitation movement in India.India, from time immemorial has been known as the cradle of civilizations and culture. Women are traditionally honoured and respected. Yet those belonging to some sections of society are ostracized and treated in a degrading manner. For centuries, women born into families of untouchables have been assigned the humiliating task of manual scavenging, and carry human faeces on their heads. In the Malin Basti of Alwar, Rajasthan, Usha and many other women like her, sneak out before sunrise to avoid being seen: the first rays of the sun would reveal their identity. This group has lost their identity and life holds no joy or meaning.
They merely move from one house to another, performing the demeaning task of cleaning human excreta or night soil, often using their bare hands to excavate this from toilets. This has to be carried for long distances to be disposed off. Today, many of these women's lives have been transformed. A ray of hope lights up their days. This is because they have joined Nai Disha, a project set up by the Sulabh International Social Service Organisation (SISSO) to rehabilitate scavenger women and provide them with vocational training to enable them to change their occupation
